When you are shopping for new modern baby furniture, chances are you’ll be overwhelmed by the vast options the market offers. Some are absolutely essential, some are lovely yet not necessary. In fact, there are also some that aren’t even useful. To help and guide you sort through the abundant options, you need to know the basic necessities to have in hand.
First is a crib. It needs to meet all safety requirements, be it a new or used one. And if you plan on buying a used crib, make sure to check each of the options offered carefully to ensure that they also meet the same standards and have never been recalled. The next essential item for a nursery is the bedding for your baby’s crib, including the waterproof, flannel-backed mattress cover and tight-fitted sheets. Avoid infant cushions at all costs, since they have soft coverings and are filled loosely with pellets or plastic foam beads. Get rid of all the quilts, pillows, sheepskins, comforters, and any other pillow-like soft items.
You’ll also need a changing table, especially the one that also meets the safety requirements. Place the table on a padded mat or carpet, and against the wall instead of a window. This way, you can avoid any risk of your baby falling out the window. For a diaper pail, make sure it’s closed securely. Keep the second pail if you will wash your own diapers.
The last item is a big plastic washtub to bathe your baby. Alternatively, a kitchen sink will do, as long as the faucet is out of the way and you’ve turned off the dishwasher. You can switch to a tub after the first month; always be sure the bathing area is thoroughly cleaned before you bath your little one.
